India's Own Telecom Technology Breakthrough Contd...

CorDECT was a Wireless in Local Loop (WLL) telephony technology developed by the Telecommunications and Computer Networks Group (TeNet)2 and Midas along with Analog Devices3, under the direction of Jhunjhunwala (Refer Exhibit II for a note on WLL and other telecom technologies).

Lauded as an innovative breakthrough in the world of telecom, CorDECT was the only WLL technology in the world that could be used simultaneously for voice and data (Internet) communication at high speeds. CorDECT was developed specifically to address the need for inventing a cost effective and viable telecom technology alternative for India (and other developing countries).

It was cheaper than other telecom technologies like TDMA and CDMA.

Apart from being very expensive to install and maintain, these technologies also could not be used for communicating voice and data signals simultaneously. CorDECT could provide these functionalities without having to compromise on the speed and the quality of its service.

CorDECT was originally developed to provide telecom services to the rural and the semi-urban areas of India. However, after its successful implementation in these areas, it was found that CorDECT could be equally useful in urban areas as well. Due to the benefits it offered, CorDECT was soon adopted by major telecom operators not only in India, but also in countries like South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Brazil, Russia, Argentina, Madagascar, Fiji, Philippines and Indonesia...
